Senate Select Committee on National Broadband Network

ENA recently responded to the Senate Select Committee Inquiry on the National Broadband Network (NBN).

On 25 June 2008, the Senate established the Select Committee on the NBN to inquire into and report on the Government’s proposal to partner with the private sector to upgrade parts of the existing network to fibre to provide minimum broadband speeds of 12 megabits per second to 98 per cent of Australian homes and businesses on an open access basis. National Broadband Network: regulatory reform for 21st century broadband

ENA supports the Australian Government’s plans for a National Broadband Network (NBN) and, in particular, the efficient use of infrastructure assets and services. The energy industry has extensive electricity infrastructure assets and capacity, which may be useful in assisting with the rollout of the NBN. Many electricity network businesses also have significant experience in the commercial rollout and installation of cable television infrastructure and fibre using electricity assets, as well as the commercial sale of fibre network capacity to telecommunications carriers.
